Words to Put in the Dirt

By Abigail Singleton

Sometimes I hear a word and I think to myself, why are people still giving these monstrosities any attention? It is time we as a society decide to round up all of the words that should not be used any longer, and start a boycott! Boycott all of the ugly words!

CHEEKY

What does cheeky mean? Does it mean someone has big cheeks? Wait a minute, what cheeks are we talking about here? Is this really what we are going to use to describe a style of underwear? And they’re not even comfortable! Halfway between a thong and hipsters? No, thank you! Or worse, when someone uses it to describe a personality. It just sounds wrong!

OCD

It is a growing fad in today’s world to use the disorder known as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, as a way to describe the majority’s preference for things to be tidy and perfectly organized. This seems to be a trend with multiple mental illnesses lately. If something is out of place, leave it to the people with their undiagnosed Obsessive Compulsive Disorders to complain.

LITERALLY

This word has basically had it’s meaning stolen from it. When you do something and say you literally just did something, it doesn’t make a difference if you were to say you did it without using the word. Maybe it is just in attempts to emphasize the statement, or let everyone know you are being serious. Either way, it doesn’t make any sense, and it takes away from the moments where using the word ‘literally’ is actually practical.

BROMANCE

What is a bromance you ask? It is a strong friendship between two males. Why do we call this a bromance? Well, toxic masculinity has made it nearly impossible for men to project basic human feelings and expressions without being accused of homosexuality. I vote that any word contributing to toxic masculinity should be dropped off of the deep end. Let’s normalize all human emotions regardless of gender!

So, I am not going to say that I have never used any of these words, because I most certainly have. Not out of enjoyment, but just because it’s a bad habit. If we all can work together as a team to keep these lame words out of our vocabulary, then they will be forgotten, and we can live in a world that is freed of pointless sayings and words that cripple humanity.
